About the tour

At Your Service Cancún Presents, Ek Balam & Valladolid

Ek Balam translates to 'Black Jaguar'. The Mayan ruins of Ek Balam offer something new for those who wish to explore the rich culture of Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula. Thanks to restoration work begun in 1997, we now know it was a city of great importance. Its main pyramid, approximately 35 meters high, can still be climbed for an incredible view over the jungle.

The 'Acropolis' is the largest structure in Ek Balam and houses the royal tomb of King Ukit Kan Lek Tok’. The temple where he was buried, called 'The Throne', has an entrance shaped like the mouth of a monster, possibly representing a jaguar.

We then visit Valladolid, founded by Francisco de Montejo in 1543. Here, Mayan and Mexican cultures merge with Spanish colonial architecture. Around the main square, you’ll find local handicraft shops, jewelry stores, and restaurants serving delicious regional cuisine.

Next, we visit a cenote — a deep limestone well formed when the roof of an underground cave collapses, filling with rainwater and underground rivers. The word 'cenote' comes from the Mayan 'dzonot', meaning 'well'. Please bring comfortable clothing, a swimsuit, towels, and biodegradable sunscreen.
