At Your Service Cancún presents, Ek Balam & Valladolid

Ek Balam translates to “Black Jaguar”, Ek Balam Mayan ruins offer something new for people wanting to explore the rich culture of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. Very little is known about this place, but due to the recent restoration works started in 1997, we now know it is a city of great importance and very interesting characteristics. What makes this site unique is the shape of the main pyramid and the fact that you can climb to the top. It is 96 ft. tall and you get a great view over the Peninsula and treetops.

The “Acropolis”, the largest structure at Ek Balam and it contains the royal tomb of King Ukit Kan Le'k Tok'. The temple in which Ukit Kan Leʼk Tokʼ was buried, called El Trono ('The Throne'). The doorway is in the shape of a monster-like mouth, possibly depicting a jaguar.

Next we will be visiting Valladolid, which was built on an archaeological site by Francisco de Montejo in 1543, Valladolid is where Mayan and Mexican Culture blend with ancient Spanish architecture, such as churches, and monasteries. Around the main square there are several local handicraft shops, jewelry stores and restaurants where you can enjoy the exquisite local food.

Next the tour will visit a cenote. This is a deep, water-filled sinkhole in limestone that is created when the roof of an underground cavern collapses. This creates a natural pool which is then filled by rain and water flowing from underground rivers. The word cenote comes from the Mayan word dzonot, which means "well."

For this tour, please bring runners or hiking boots for walking on the ruins and sandals for snorkeling and bathing. Don’t
forget comfortable clothes, towels and sunscreen. We don’t carry snorkel equipment, but it is available for you to rent.
